Estimation is not about deadline, estimation is about communication.

During my previous co-training with Simon Bennette, we have come up with a new process to re-define the true meaning of estimation, and we call it "Estimation Mapping".   Exercise: Using Impact Map method to find the goal "How to make estimation beneficial for everyone".   Experiment: The participants were slightly confused in the beginning (I suppose because we all think estimation is mostly for management to establish deadlines for the team). However, they proved themselves such ... [More]

TDD for Game Of Life

In this blog, I will demonstrate how to do Test-Driven-Development step by step when solving the Game Of Life. In short, doing TDD means we write test before writing code. In this example, I will use C# and Visual Studio for IDE. To solve the Game Of Life, I want to have the following test. I always run test to have the failing result first before altering implementation,  Add cells to a universe, and get all of them [TestMethod] public void UniverseGetAllLivingCells() {    ... [More]

Sprint Retrospective and its pitfalls

Sprint retrospective meeting is a last event in a sprint held by scrum team to reflex on the team and their works during the last sprint, by doing this, the team is practicing the Agile “inspect and adapt” principle. Poker Planning: estimate as a Team

In traditional software development methodology, members who are in charge of a feature will estimate it alone based on his own experience; and if the estimation is incorrect (which is very usual), the developer will hear the same old “You yourself estimated it, you have to complete it in the estimated time”. In Agile Development, team agreement values more than individual idea. In other to accomplish the estimation, the whole team will do estimation for a US and how to complete it ... [More]

Thanks to Bas Vodde, and his informative SM course, there are basically 5 moves that one could perform and combine as a SM when his team face an issue. They are: Question Educate Facilitate Actively do nothing. Interrupt.   First glance at the list, there ... [More]
